Resolved Question:

2002 saturn SL1 with codes P0507 Idle air control system higher than expected and P0301 cyl 1 misfire. pulled no 1 plug and looks like it has not been firing. new plug installed and new ignition wire also. coil pack changed 2 yrs ago but proabaly wouldn't be a first if it went bad. screw driver to ear test sounds like the injector is working. where do i go from here

Vacuum leaks usually set this code when the code is not a result of bad idle

Check along the intake manifold and gasket to see if its leaking. Especially around number one cylinder. A big fat vacuum leak in the intake manifold gasket can cause both of your codes.

should i spray starting fluid around the area to detect the leak? other ideas?
Expert:  Amedee replied 7 years ago.
Sure... you could do that.

If its only misfiring at idle, then I would suspect a vacuum leak.

If, its misfiring all the time, I would recommend to check compression and spark and maybe even fuel trigger.
