1998 Grand Prix: 3.8L..serpentine belt..idler pulley..belt tensioner

Resolved Question:

I have a 1998 Grand Prix 3.8L with a sqeaky serpentine belt. It looks like idler pulley is not in line with other pulleys. How do I replace the belt tensioner? Any special tools needed?

Ok, here is what will need to be done to replace the tensioner. Feel free to contact me with any questions on any of the steps or any problems you may encounter.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system.
  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4. Remove the generator.
  5. Disconnect the heater hose adapters with heater hoses from the drive belt tensioner.

  6. Remove the drive belt tensioner bolts.
  7. Remove the drive belt tensioner.
    Object Number: 153605  Size: SH

  8. If replacing the drive belt tensioner, remove the heater water bypass inlet pipe and seal.

  9. If replacing the drive belt tensioner, install the heater water bypass inlet pipe and seal.
    Object Number: 153563  Size: SH

  10. Install the drive belt tensioner.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Install the drive belt tensioner bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the drive belt tensioner bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  12. Connect the heater hose adapters with heater hoses to the drive belt tensioner.
  13. Install the generator.
  14. Install the drive belt.
  15. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant.
  16. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable.
