P0851 Neutral Safety Switch, 2003 Subaru legacy wag, automatic (of course). Replaced switch and ots subharness, yet recodes after several starts/trips. Upper tranny selector body looks clean (no food/gunk), and its harnesses are clean...switching action looks ok.
2003 Subaru Legacy SE auto 2.5 Already Tried: Neutral Safety Switch and its subharness REPLACED too! Inspected upper shift: no food/gunk, connectors clean, switching action seems normal. Car starts, shifts and runs normally, but reflags CEL PO851 after 2-3 trips. Is this positively just finetuning the cable and rotational switch adjustments, like TSB for LATER (05-06) Subies? Never seen an 851 before. Problem was identical BEFORE replacing switch and subharness, if I forgot to mention. Thanks.
Hi there! You may just need to adjust the switch.Put the car in neutral and loosen the bolts, take a 1/8 inch drill bit and line up all of the holes until the bit goes all the way to the small hole in the transmission case.Tighten the bolts and this should set it up right.Hope this helps! Thanks
I'll try this again. Note that the attached cable has adjusting nuts, too, which supposedly need to be set at exactly zero free-play according to TSB for 05-06. I'll try adjustment again and verify results later (requires several trips by customer). Thanks
Yes,adjust the switch first then if needed you make adjustments on the cable. Then, using a scan tool you should be able to verify gear position.
