2004 XG350: Was driving with no problem and the engine light came on.

Customer Question

Have a 2004 XG350 with 89000 miles. Was driving with no problem and the engine light came on. Checked the oil and it''s okay. What should be checked next?   thank you.

The check or service engine light comes on to tell you that the computer has sensed a problem with a component in the engine control or emission system. When the light comes on the computer stores a code related to the failed component. This code can be retrieved with a tool called a scanner, once the technician has the code he has a pretty good idea of what part or sensor has caused the problem. Even if the car is still running well, the system should be scanned to be sure that you are not causing damage to the motor or other related parts. Sometimes it is something as simple as a broken connection or leaking vacuum hose or loose gas cap. If you get the codes and post them here we can help you with repairs. Some auto parts stores like Auto Zone or Pep Boys will scan the system for free, in hopes of selling you the parts needed for repairs. Thanks Bob

Thank you for your quick reply. I will take the car to get it scanned. Hopefully it won't be anything major. We have had very little trouble with this car.

Thanks again

Your most welcome. Be sure to write down the code numbers that come up, as they are the key to finding the problem. Also remember these fellows are parts salesmen and not technicians. Let me know what you find. Thanks
