2001 ford ranger: wheel drive..disengage..automatic dashboard switch

Resolved Question:

My 2001 ford ranger 4-wheel drive will not disengage. It is an automatic dashboard switch that turns to 4-wheel high and to 4- wheel low.

You most likely have a problem with the motor on the transfer case. If you take it off, it looks similar to a power window motor. The plastic internals brake. You have to replace the motor assembly if this is the case. I haven't been able to purchase the gear portion that usually fails separately. Let me know if you need anything else. By the way it's easy to get to, you can do it yourself.
