PINPOINT TEST AC: THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IS INOPERATIVE

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

Test StepResult / Action to Take
AC1 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER POWER SUPPLY
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220c.
  • Ignition ON.
  • Using the following table, measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220c, harness side and ground.

    PinCircuit
    11705 (LG/OG)
    12785 (BK/LG)
    191002 (BK/PK)
    20640 (RD/YE)


  • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to AC2.

No
REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
AC2 CHECK INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GROUND CIRCUITS 57 (BK) AND 676 (PK/OG)
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220c pin 13, circuit 676 (PK/OG), harness side and ground; and between the instrument cluster C220c pin 15, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC3.

No
REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
AC3 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) in this section. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

Your answer was incorrect. Ford advised that the
4x4 motor was bad which also caused the ignition
fuse 45 to short out the instrument panel.
