2001 Volvo S40: 8-10 seconds..start unless..gas pedal..whats wrong?

I have a 2001 Volvo S40. Sometimes it takes 8-10 seconds before it will start and recently i couldnt get it to start unless i held the gas pedal to the floor. whats wrong?

We have seen a couple of these within the past year and both times the starting problem was the result of a bad Idle Air Control (IAC).

Can the idle air control be cleaned up, or should it just be replaced. I can do both, but I dont want to break or ruin anything..
