95 Oldsmobile cutlass ciera sl: cylinder..trouble removing the starter

Customer Question

I have a 95 Oldsmobile cutlass ciera sl 3.1 6 cylinder. I am having trouble removing the starter. I have disconnected all wiring and the 2 main mounting bolts, and I can''t get the starter to even wiggle at all. I have spent a lot of time inspecting for more clamps and bolts and I can''t seem to see anything left to hold onto it that good. I have referenced the Haynes manual and it mentions 2 separate 3.1 liter removal directions. One involving taking off the oil filter and dropping the oil pan. Now the oil pan might be in the way of another mounting bolt but I can''t see any reason to take off the oil filter. Thus leading me to believe I''m working with the oth starter removal that is as simple as just removing the 2 only mounting bolts and disconnecting the wiring and pulling the starter right out. Only this is not the case for me. If anyone has removed starters out of these cars please send a tip back to me. My new starter only has 2 mounting bolts so what else if any holds it

Hi, I'm Doc, GM expert. Does your car have a dust cover between the engine and the trans? A flat steel plate cover?

Reply to Doctor Automotive's Post: the car is in a parking ramp and I am un able to check that right now but I don't think so based on the fact I know there is nothing like that near the starter to be in the way of any bolts or such

Is there a bracket in the front of the starter that is bolted to the block?

Reply to Doctor Automotive's Post: I am 99% sure there is not. If there was would I be able to split the mounting surface where the two main mounting bolts go. Because I can't even spilt that at all. I have gave it some nice hits already with a hammer and a rod but no success. Should there be a bracket attached to the front(when you say front Im thinking right where the wires connect. which would be very close to the oil filter. If the front is the face most open to me then i am 100% sure there is no bracket.)39548.8288548958
