Hi, welcome to Just Answer.

I need a little more information, because from the description "differential went through the tranny," it would indicate the vehicle most likely does not move or has a very loud noise while moving. Can you tell me if you took it in for just a leak? Also, how many miles are on it? And how long would it take before you had to add fluid to keep it at the correct level?

Rip,
The van is a 1998 it has about 64,000 miles on it It did not show any signs of a leak. I was driving home and it started to slip in and out of gear. I have very limited knowledge but kne enough to check the fluid which did not register on the dip stick I added about 4 quarts and got a reading on the dip stick. At that point it ran fine, Shifted well and no noise . However it was leaking bad.

I see....it sounds like one of the axle seals on the differential part of the transmission let loose which drained the fluid. There are various other points which can leak as well, but not usually 4 quarts unnoticed. Typically the repair is about $250 for the seal and the labor to remove the axle and replace it. What bothers me is that the transmission slipped from the loss of fluid, this may have began immediate internal damage to the clutches inside and these transmissions are known for premature failures at low milages. Since it ran good after adding the fluid, I'd say there's a good chance no permanent damage occured. I suspect the message they left was for the differential (axle) seal being pushed inside the transmission, and you'll be looking at around $250 to repair it. If after you speak with them tommorrow you have any other questions, please post back here.
