bought a 94 4x4 Turbo diesel 5 speed...fuel mileage sucks 13mpg.

Resolved Question:

I just bought a 94 4x4 Turbo diesel 5 speed. 77000 miles perfect condition. The fuel mileage sucks 13mpg. I have a 410 rear axle I found out through the door tag. My last diesel got 19-20 towing or not. Other than regular driving I haul some bikes around long distance, not more than 2 goldwings at a time. What can I do to improve the fuel mileage. I am not opposed to changing axles if this will get me 20.

Hello,Unfortunually thats the nature of the beast. If you change out gear ratio you might get better mileage but the pulling power would suffer.I wouldnt go anything less than a 3.73 ratio. You can also go synthetic such as amsoil for the rearend ,transfer case, front differential which creates less friction. You will gain two to three miles just by doing that.If you do it all might get close enough to what you like.Sometimes exhaust work helps also which give a little back on performanand mileage.Really depends on how much you are willing to spend to get there.Hope that helps.thanks for the question.roger
