How do you replace an alternator on a 2000 VW Jetta TDI with A/T and AC? What skill level is required and/or how much time does mechanic code says it takes to complete job?
Optional Information: 2000 Volkswagen Jetta 1.9 TDIAlready Tried: I was advised at Battery Mart the alternator was not sending any current to the battery. They would not replace it because they said it involved dropping the A/C compressor to get to the alternator. I have only looked under the hood at the alternator. My experience is with older VWs, 1982-84 Jetta's and Rabbit's. But knowing what it cost me to have a starter replaced I want to explore the possibility of replacing the alternator myself.

Relist: I still need help. The answer only stated, Pretty involved have to remove compressor brackets etc flate rate pays 4.0 hours so you know its pretty involved. Can the bracket be removed without disconnecting any parts of the AC and still allow removal of alternator? Does the tension on the belt driving the alternator need to be loosened and is it difficult to get to that part of the job?
