how long does it take a mechanic to run a diagnostic

Customer Question

how long does it take a mechanic to run a diagnostic test on a car

That depends on what sort of diagnostic test he is running.

If its just a simple code read then it takes about a minute or so.

If its a live data reading then it takes as long as it takes. Some live data readings can entail the computer being subjected to fabricated sensor readings to see how it reacts and that can be left to run overnight if need be, especially with problems which are only apparent occasionally.

Another type of live data reading entails the car being hooked up to diagnostic equipment and then being driven for an indetermined length of time from cold to hot.
