1997 Ford Taurus-using too much gas. Had a tune up. no help.

Resolved Question:

1997 Ford Taurus-using too much gas. Had a tune up. no help. Ford people said the catalytic converter was bad. Would this cause low gas mileage?

It could but that's bnot automatic. It really depends iin what way the converter faiiled. If it's just low efficiency, that won't effect mileage but if it gets restricted in any way, that could.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: is it possible to tell the difference? The Ford people just put a computer on it and got a code back. I don't know what the code was
Expert:  Hammer Time replied 11 years ago.
If they found it that way, then the code was probably a PO420 for efficiency and not likely a mileage issue but you won't really know untill they repair that. It could have a blockage also.
