Mins..shuts down 3.8L V6 engine CfI equipped..injectors

Customer Question

I have85 T-bird which starts runs 8 mins. and shuts down 3.8L V6 engine CfI equipped. I recently could not get injectors to spray. I found a green wire from the EEC and connected it to the ground wire terminal on the battery the car started and ran for 8 mins at high idle speed and shut down after several hours it will start again. repeats 8 min run then shuts down will not start hot or warm What?

10 K isn't really enough. Most coils these days are capable of 30K,. You need to check your coil with an ohmeter. To check primary test between the positive and negative terminals with the plug disconnected. For secondary, test from either terminal to the high voltage terminal. there are 2 different types of ignition systems. here are the specs for both.


Dura Spark system, identified by ignition module mounted on fender well.
primary 0.8 - 1.6
secondary 7700 - 10,500


TFI ign identified by ignition module mounted to the side of the distributor
Primary 0.3 - 1.0
Secondary 8,000 - 11,500


If it is out of either spec, replace the coil. If you see any white corrosion on the coil or distributor cap towers replace the wires also.


Also note, testing the coil when hot may produce different results. Be sure to check that.
