These engines were famous for developing bad valve stem seals when tehy got older. If teh seals get old and brittle, tehy tend to fall apart and allow oil to be drawn in along teh valve guides to burn in the cylinders. If this is the case, they often cause more smoke when starting the engine after sitting for a few hours.
try draining your engine oil and checking for small hard black chunks of valve seal material in the oil; pieces often end up in the bottom of the oil pan. To accurately diagnose this failure, removing the valve cover and possibly some springs for inspection of the seals may be necessary.
