Blazer: fuel pump..filter stalled at the stop sign

Customer Question

96 4 door blazer just had a fuel pump, filter replaced. After driving it home it stalled at the stop sign. 1/4 tank of gas. Filled it up and had not drove it for a couple of days. Went on long drive and had no trouble until it got below a 1/2 tank and then stalled at ever stop sign. Then on the way home on interstate (100 miles)I once noticed the RPM's drp 500 and could not pick up speed. then later (about 30 miles from home)I lost RPM's and engine lights came on. It restarted (netural) and I made it home. It did not stall at any of the stop signs from the interstate to my home. Affraid to drive at present. Cost me $1008 for the fuel pump to be repaired :( Jeff

It sounds like theres a problem with the installation of the pump. I would bring it right back to the guy that charged you $1008 and tell him to find out why. (without charge).

Wow $1008 and I thought people always say the dealership is expensive. We have never claimed a fortune that size for a fuel pump job.

Re: invoice # XXXXX Cust ID: 7624

Dear Dick,

I recently had my Blazer at your garage for work on June 10. Overall, I was happy about the service and how quickly your crew found and dealt with the trouble with my Blazer. What I have trouble with is the amount charged for the fuel pump. I have been in the customer service field for 30+ years and consider myself to be a great listener to insure I always have the correct information.

Larry SXXXXXXXX called to tell me that the total cost for the parts and labor would be $980, which you made sure was the final cost. The fuel pump, however, was quoted to me at $310 not $392.84. When I payed the bill Larry informed me the parts were from CarQuest. After some Internet searching I saw that fuel pumps range from $175 to $280. I called CarQuest myself and got a quote for a complete fuel pump assembly for my vehicle for $264.86 and NAPA with a low price guarantee of $237.99. Sure is a big difference from what you charge. The price of the fuel filter and valve are also overpriced from what I found on the Internet and at CarQuest.

As a licensed repair shop you have the ability to receive discounts on parts that are not available to the average customer, so I find your price gouging in this situation very disturbing. Auto repair strike fear in the hearts of many people for this very reason, which leads to the bad reputation your industry seems to always have. A co-worker just had their fuel pump replaced in a Dodge Ram Pick-up at the BP station down the street from your shop and the final bill was $500. Needless to say, you probably won’t be receiving any referrals from me or my co-workers at LXXXXXXX.
