Sounds like the starter was not disengaging. When this happens it over-speeds the starter and ruins the armature. It will also discharge the battery.
You need to change the starter and charge the battery. Also make sure the new starter is disengaging from the flywheel or this will happen again.
Reasons for this happening can be a bad starter drive Assembly bad flywheel or electrical . Usually turns out to be a mechanical problem with the starter and is corrected when the starter is changed.
