I purchased an aftermarket radio car/SUV. It's a newer radio

Customer Question

Hello,
I purchased an aftermarket radio for my car/SUV. It’s a newer radio and all of the cables in the new harness are color coded in a very friendly way. Positive and negative wires are easily distinguished by whether or not there is a stripe on the wire. I want to crimp all of the new wires to the preexisting wires, but the colors don’t match. How can I tell which wires are supposed to be crimped together? The vehicle is a 2005 Mercury Mariner.
Thanks!

Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,

Thank you for the question and your patience. Should you still need assistance for information purposes only...

Initially, is there an amp installed with the 2005 Mercury Mariner? If none, would a low-cost plug-n-play harness adapter serve your need ? (may be applicable only to standard models)

I'm not sure if there is or not. I am unable to purchase an adapter at this point because the stock harness has already been trimmed.

I understand.

What are the "...stock harness..." wire colors please?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I believe these are all of them:yellow with a black stripe,
orange with a green stripe,
green with an orange stripe,
orange with a red stripe,
grey with a blue stripe,
blue with a red stripe,
yellow with a brown stripe,
black with a green stripe,
black (ground)
grey with a pink stripe,
grey with a green stripe,
white with a green stripe

Appreciate the additional information.

And the "...aftermarket radio..." model number please?

Is a multi-meter available? It would be necessary to test/confirm the wire functions. Ignition key OFF, test which has always +12, then test which has a +12 with ignition switched to ACC/ON. Back with no key in, test which wire has 0Ω to any metal part of the car (this would be the ground wire). Then test the remaining wires paired to the other wires 1 at a time. Whichever pairs shows a 4 - 8 Ω ohms reading would be the speaker. A click can be heard to show which speaker it is:

• yellow with a black stripe;

• orange with a green stripe;

• white with a green stripe;

• green with an orange stripe;

• orange with a red stripe;

• grey with a blue stripe;

• blue with a red stripe;

• yellow with a brown stripe;

• black with a green stripe;

• black;

• grey with a pink stripe;

• grey with a green stripe.
