My late mother was a resident of Hong Kong. She was not a Canadian

Customer Question

My late mother was a resident of Hong Kong. She was not a Canadian national. She passed away leaving a current account in a bank in Vancouver with a balance of CA$19,000 in the account. As the executor of her will, I will need to close it and distribute the money to the beneficiaries stated in her will. Do I need a Canadian lawyer to assist my Hong Kong lawyer to do this?

Debra Thal :

Your HK lawyer cannot do this for you.

Debra Thal :

You can self-represent or retain a lawyer in BC.

Debra Thal :

Only a lawyer licenced in BC can act for you in BC.

Debra Thal :

You can contact the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association and use their Lawyer Referral Service. You will be given the name of a lawyer and can consult with the lawyer and the first half hour will be $25.

The number is:
