My husband passed away Aug 2011. He was a civilian employee of DND. He had been receiving disabillity payments while off work. At the time of his death, I received a cheque for "severance" pay with 30% tax withheld. I received a T4A which included the severance in Box 106 as a "Death Benefit". Because of this, apparently I am unable to file a "Rights or Things" return, but have to include this as his income on his final tax return. Is this correct? I seem to find a lot of conflicting information on the CRA website - it makes the difference of paying $9700 or $160, so I would really like to know. Thank you
