I am supposed to be receiving a large sum of money from a relative in Malaysia. What is the best way to receive the money, ie, cheque, money order, etc into Canada. I read that we don't pay tax from inheritance money in Canada. The documents are going to probate at this present time. Do I pay the lawyer in charge of these affairs for going to probate? And are there any other fees I will be responsible for. There is only money involved, there are no properties. My uncle did not have a signed will. But I am the only living relative. Being that there is no signed will, will the process be harder to pass through the supreme court in Malaysia? Thank you
Optional Information: State/Country relating to question: Malaysia Already Tried: I live in British Columbia Canada. The only thing I have done so far is to fill out my personal information, name, address, DOB, drivers license which was a representation permission document so the lawyer could present to the high court, file an application for inheritance claim as the bonafide next of kin to this fundat at the probate department. This is what has been done so far. They went to the Bank in Malaysia and gave the written documents to back up the inheritance.
You do not have to pay anything.
If there are any fees at all, for the Court or a lawyer then they come out of the estate.
If you are being asked for any fees at all then something is wrong.
Do you know this relative that died?
Please think about this answer and then let me know because I have some grave concerns if you aren't sure who this relative is
