I have a 1 year lease and I would like to assign the lease

I have a 1 year lease and I would like to assign the lease to someone else. My landlord says i can only sublet not assign. Is this legal?

You do not have a right to assign the lease. That is up to your landlord. So long as your landlord allows you to sublet you cannot require the landlord to allow you to assign the lease.
