My wife and I have been married for thirty-eight years. We will soon beginning mediation talks in order to get a separation agreement, and after a divorce. I live in Edmundston, New Brunswick and my wife lives in London, Ontario. The mediation will take place in Ontario. At present my wife is paying the insurance premiums on a policy for me. At present I do not have access to this bill. The cost of the premiums is $160.00 a month. My concern is that if I have to pay these verycostly premiums (which will also increase) then I might end up paying mywife more than 50% of my income (salary, pension etc). My question is am Iobliged to pay for life insurance in which my wife is the beneficiary after we before and after we are divorced? laurence
Already Tried: I haven't asked anyone this question.
It depends on what is agreed upon.
If you have to pay her spousal support then it's likely that a Court would require you to also have life insurance to be able to support her if you die first.
But it depends on the facts.
As well, if will be considered in terms of evaluating your ability to pay.
