Calculations for a set of variables

Ø Open the class survey results that were entered into the MINITAB worksheet.

Ø We want to calculate the mean for the 10 rolls of the die for each student in the class. Label the column next to die10 in the Worksheet with the word mean. Pull up Calc > Row Statistics and select the radio-button corresponding to Mean. For Input variables: enter all 10 rows of the die data. Go to the Store result in: and select the mean column. Click OK and the mean for each observation will show up in the Worksheet.

Ø We also want to calculate the median for the 10 rolls of the die. Label the next column in the Worksheet with the word median. Repeat the above steps but select the radio-button that corresponds to Median and in the Store results in: text area, place the median column.

Calculating Descriptive Statistics

Ø Calculate descriptive statistics for the mean and median columns that where created above. Pull up Stat > Basic Statistics > Display Descriptive Statistics and set Variables: to mean and median. The output will show up in your Session Window. Print this information.

Calculating Confidence Intervals for one Variable

Ø Open the class survey results that were entered into the MINITAB worksheet.

Ø We are interested in calculating a 95% confidence interval for the hours of sleep a student gets. Pull up Stat > Basic Statistics > 1-Sample t and set Samples in columns: to Sleep. Click the OK button and the results will appear in your Session Window.

Ø We are also interested in the same analysis with a 99% confidence interval. Use the same steps except select the Options button and change the Confidence level: to 99.

You can complete these calculations in Excel as well. When you open the data in the Excel format, type "mean" in the column after "die10". Then in cell X2 type =AVERAGE(N2:W2) to calculate the mean for that roll of the die. Then use this same formula to determine the average for all the remaining rows. In the next column to the right of that, type "median" after the "mean". Then in cell y2 type =MEDIAN(N2:W2) and use that same formula in the rows of that column.

Then under each of those columns (in my sheet this is in cells X22 and Y22, type in =AVERAGE(X2:X21) and the same for the Y column. Under those cells, type in =STDEV(X2:X21) and the same for the Y column so that you have the mean and standard deviation for the mean and of the median.

We then need to find the confidence interval for the SLEEP variable. Under that column, in cell G22, type =AVERAGE(G2:G21). Under that in cell G23, type =STDEV(G2:G21). Now we can find the maximum error of the confidence interval. In cell G24, type =CONFIDENCE.T(0.05,G23,20). The 0.05 is 1 minus the confidence interval, the C23 is the standard deviation, and 20 is the number in our sample. You then need to calculate the confidence interval from this maximum error by subtracting it from the mean and adding it to the mean as shown on page 320 of the text.

Finally, you can go one more cell down to G25 and type =CONFIDENCE.T(0.01,G23,20) to find the maximum error for a 99% confidence interval. Again, you would need to subtract this and add it to find the actual confidence interval.
