Have an 99 Cadillac an it go into driver but won't reverse 117k miles ,have change the fluid the oil smelled burnt an had metal shavings an some brown hay looking stuff on it

from your description it sounds like the reverse clutch has failed inside the trans. that is the burning and debris in the pan. the trans will have to be removed and inspected for the failure and most likely will need to be rebuilt.
