Typically, a differential that is whining doesn't NEED to be replaced. A whine is caused by the gear tooth pattern, but aside from the noise, if it's only whining, it could last like that indefinitely. The time to get concerned is when you hear roaring or grinding noise from the rear differential. However, it isn't a bad idea to have the rear differential serviced, and have them check it for a loose pinion or something of that nature while they're servicing it. And new fluid may help reduce some of the gear noise, as well.
It is a roar, and its gotten much louder since used purchase in sept/2011.I have read of numerous owners going thru several diffs in cts's.car has 100k on it. Also was reported to DOT for possible recall, but was denied.Mine is not an isolated incident.
Found a part #15793756 for a caddy replacement diff. on a cadillac forum.Your response? Thanx, Joe G.
Ah, I see. That is different than a gear whine.A roar noise is caused by faulty bearings, and generally speaking, the whole differential should be replaced. There are several different options available for the rear differential replacement. It will depend on what your vin/vehicle build is. They retail for about $1000 at the dealer. If you call your local GM dealer, they can look it up by vin and quote you the right part number and price.
