Cadillac Seville how do you replace fuel injectors on a 1991

Customer Question

How do you replace fuel injectors on a 1991 cadillac seville. I am at my wits end. Everything possbile replaced on this vehicle including EGR Valve, fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, cap wires, new OEM computer. The only thing left is fuel injectors. I want to pursue this & do myself. I have already spent over $1500 with mechanic and way over budget. Vehicle is mint and has only 58K miles and has sat for over 2 years and was only driven 10K miles over the last 13 years. Purchased from a friend that never drove this one much hense the problems. Won't pass CA Smog either. Measured CO at 2.0% should be .2% or less when dynamically tested at smog station at 15 MPH or 1655 RPM & 25 mph on dyno at 1803 RPM. All other tests passed NO OK HC OK. % CO over 5 times over the limit and when vehicle was smogged by owner in2009 at 58Kmilespassed CO at .2% or less so something happened since the last 1500 miles. Please help.

I want to upgrade fuel injectros with this set as follows: These are the Bosch 4 hole spray nozzle upgrade injectors. Our injectors utilize the factory fuel rail clips and do not require modifications such as the other seller's injectors. These are not the shorter Bosch injectors, but they are the same length as factory units!!

You are guaranteed a smoother idle, better throttle response, and fuel economy!

We have sold hundreds of sets to Cadillac owners in the past 5 years and will continue to be the leader in Cadillac fuel injection products.

We only rebuild and test our injectors on the newest state of the art ASNU fuel injection service bench. Ask yourself why other sellers do not show pictures of their servicing equipment. Most do not possess the proper equipment to properly service and test fuel injectors. Used so called "rebuilt" injectors will work but will not provide the full benefits of our rebuilt and flow matched injectors!

Restore your fuel economy! Did you know that fuel injectors are the most overlooked maintenance item in a vehicle. In most cases they are easy to replace and pay for themselves within months in the amount of fuel savings you will receive. If you don't see an increase in fuel economy on the set, send them back and I will refund you 110% of the purchase price. Let's help the environment and decrease dependency on foreign oil. You'll be doing this without changing your lifestyle and saving money in the process.

Fuel economy increases of 5-10% are typical. Drive 15,000 miles a year and improve your fuel economy from 14mpg to 15mpg (7.1% increase). You will save 71 gallons of gas. That's easily $300 in just one year with today's gas prices. The savings don't end after a year either! Your satisfaction is guaranteed!

I can buy entire set or rebuilt injectros for under $150. How can I test the injectros in the vehicle now? What is the resistance reading for the coil. Also the vehicle has has the carbon clean to fuel system as well. Thank you.

I have attached the smog tests for when vehcile passed overf a year ago scan 2 and yesterdays failed smog scan 3, Thank you and you nownow as much as I do about the issues with this vehicle.

Reagrds,
BBK

Likely Causes

Air Filter -
A restricted air filter can cause the engine to fail carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Fuel Pressure Regulator -
A defective fuel pressure regulator can cause high fuel pressure or leak raw fuel into the engine causing a failure in carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Fuel Injector(s) -
A leaking, shorted or worn fuel injector(s) can deliver too much fuel causing the engine to fail carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR) Valve -
An EGR valve can stick open causing a failure in carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Oxygen (O2) Sensor -
A faulty O2 sensor can cause the engine to fail carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor -
A low vacuum signal to the MAP sensor or high signal voltage can cause the engine to fail carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) -
The PCM can cause the injectors to deliver too much fuel resulting in the engine failing carbon monoxide (CO) emissions testing.

Catalytic Converter -
A faulty catalytic converter can cause a failure in carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Overlooked Causes

Air Injection Reaction (AIR) System -
An AIR system that is incorrectly directing air to the exhaust system can cause the engine to fail carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Engine Oil -
Raw fuel in the engine oil can cause the engine to fail carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Thermostat -
An open thermostat can cause the engine to run too cold resulting in a failure in carbon monoxide (CO) emission testing.

Greetings Dan:

Can you please provide me the trouble codes for the onboard computer. I am getting codes but do not have any idea what they are. I cleared the computer with the check engine light came on without noting the codes. The vehicle does have a new computer, new EGR, new fuel pump, etc. A lot of the systems were already tested and my current mechanic; who I do not trust since he has been stumbling on this one feels it is injectors or distributor since these are the only things he has not tested. Over $4K has been spent by previous owner and myself to solve the issues at hand. I spent $1500 on AC and engine parts replacement. This vehicle runs terrible and gas mileage is at 13 miles per gallon with some low end misfiring as well. If you can provide me a list of the trouble codes and want they are that would be great for this vehicle. Thank you for your time. bill

Expert: Dan replied 3 years ago.
There are too many possible codes to list....But if the check engine light comes on again you can check the codes yourself by pressing and holding the off/warmer buttons......Then if you have questions about the code once it shows up you can reply to this answer at any time. Let me know if you have questions, thanks.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.
Ok will do. I have new injectors on the way from Texas and will be doing a teardown to at least get the 20 year old ones out and replaced and nearly everything else has been replaced. Once I get the codes read again I will contact you. I will need a little time on this end since I do not have all my parts in hand. thank you again, Bill

Greetings. Just getting started on this job. Injectors finally arrived. I notice I need to remove power steering pump. Can you provide instructions on pump removal and Do I need to remove the idler tension pulley and pump horse shoe bracket to get room to work on the injector front fuel rail? What about power steering plumbing any special tool required to remove the pump adapter and lines or just move the entire assembly out of the way. I noticed that a special tool a J36391 Quick disconnect tool may b required where do I get this tool. Thank you.

Greetings nw injectors installed work too good. The car has more power then it can handle. I took it to smog and they could not run test since the vehicle is pinging way too much. I have the highest octane fuel in at 91. Can the timing be adjusted or what causes pinging. The Smog Guy claimed in spec at 13 degrees. How can I stop the pinging with 91 octane and pass the California emissions test. The car runs perfect except pinging issue with new calibrated injector set. Please help me, we are almost done. Thank you for your help thus far. Regards, BBK
Expert: Dan replied 3 years ago.

Ignition timing in park should be 10 degrees btdc

Likely Causes

Base Ignition Timing -
When the base ignition timing has been advanced too far it can cause the engine to ping or spark knock.

Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR) Valve -
An EGR valve with improper vacuum supply or defective or wrong application can increase combustion chamber temperatures causing the engine to ping or spark knock.

Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR) Solenoid -
An EGR solenoid that fails to allow vacuum to the EGR valve will increase combustion chamber temperatures causing the engine to ping or spark knock.

Cylinderheads -
Carbon deposits in the combustion chambers, wrong application or mis-machined engine mechanical parts can cause the engine to ping or have spark knock.

Thermostat -
A thermostat that fails to open or opens too slowly can cause the engine to ping or spark knock.

Catalytic Converter -
A restricted catalytic converter or exhaust system can increase combustion temperature causing the engine to ping or have spark knock.

Overlooked Causes

Spark Plugs -
Defective spark plugs or spark plugs with the incorrect heat range can increase combustion chamber temperatures causing the engine to ping or spark knock.

Fuel -
Improperly blended fuel or using fuel with an octane rating lower than the vehicle manufacturer's specifications can cause the engine to ping or spark knock.

Engine Coolant -
Low coolant level or a coolant to water mixture that is more than 50 percent antifreeze will cause the engine to ping or spark knock.

Ignition Control Module -
A faulty or wrong application ignition module or possible incorrect signal from the powertrain control module (PCM) can result in ignition timing advancing too far causing the engine to ping or spark knock.

Greetings: I will look at all these right away. One last question my parking brake will not release. It releases about 10% of the time. Sometimes will fully release. This is a vacuum release system. What is the cause to cure this one. Vacuum looks good. The parking brake some times releases very slow & some times not fully free. Thank you again, BK
Expert: Dan replied 3 years ago.
I'd assume the parking brake release actuator is the problem.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Greetings: OK I gave up on this one and the mechanic I hired is having a lot of problems solving high erratic NOX. Here is what has been replaced on this vehicle to date:

1. New PCM

2. Both O2 sensors.

3. New cat

4. New EGR & Solenoid.

5. New vac lines on all emissions controls systems.

6. New fuel injectors.

7.New distributor cap and rotor.

8. New plugs and with new wires.

9. Fresh oil change.

10. All other related systems working.

The mechanic claims the EGR works some times and then it does not during Smog. On test only in dyno mode, Sometimes it passes Nox with nymbers very low of only 200 or less. The very next time when they go to smog for verification the numbers are off the map and close to 1000. The low speed and high speed switch and go in and out on NOX. The car runs perfect except for erratic NOX and the fuel is also fresh and 91 octane the best we can get and also no more pinging or spark knock as well. What can you direct us to do next? Thank you.

Expert: Dan replied 3 years ago.

I dont know everything and will not be able to give you answers to every question you have but here is the info I have for nox problems.

Likely Causes

Ignition Timing -
Incorrect ignition timing can raise combustion temperatures resulting in the engine failing oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission testing.

Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR) Valve -
An EGR valve that fails to open or opens to little can cause the engine to fail oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission testing.

Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR) Solenoid -
An EGR solenoid that fails to supply vacuum to the EGR valve or has an inadequate vacuum supply will cause the engine to fail oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission testing.

Cylinderheads -
Carbon deposits in the combustion chambers, wrong application or mis-machined engine mechanical parts can cause the engine to fail oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission testing.

Thermostat -
A thermostat that fails to open at the correct temperature can increase combustion temperature resulting in the engine failing oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission testing.

Catalytic Converter -
A failed catalytic converter can cause the engine to fail oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission testing.

Overlooked Causes

Spark Plugs -
Spark plug heat range that is too high can result in combustion temperature increasing, causing the engine to fail oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission testing.

Fuel -
Using fuel that has a lower octane rating than the manufacturer recommends can cause the engine to fail oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission testing. Also be sure the fuel is not contaminated.

Engine Coolant -
Low coolant level or an improper coolant mixture can cause the engine to fail oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission testing.
