Hello hoghbowl, if the gauge moves back and forth then the problem is the fuel gauge sensor. This sensor is located in the tank and commonly fails due to deposits from the way that gas is made today. It will need to be replaced.

is this something i can do myself

It is not too hard to do. You can access the fuel tank unit from the trunk. Just pull back the carpet and you will see the access hole to get to the fuel pump and sender assembly.
