Question

Is there a procedure to follow for a purchase at a store?

Sent to General Experts September 26, 2007 3:26 p.m.

Hello:
I have a question and need some information in this regard. I bought a mattress from one of the stores in Saskatoon and on the 2nd day after the purchase, called the store and told them that there was a problem with my mattress and that I would like to return it. At that point they told me that they do not accept any returns. It was never mentioned during the purchase or on the purchse order (bill). Prior to the purchase I looked through a lot of stores and every store that I visited told me that the mattress once purchased could be tested and if it is not satisfactory would be replaced with an another one. Presuming that this was a general practice for all the stores, I did not enquire about the return policy. I am very unhappy with the mattress as my back is very sore from using the mattress and would like a replacement for the mattress. I tried to talk to the people at the store with no effect. Please advise me as to how I should proceed with this issue and who should be contacted.

Thanks for taking time to read through my mail. Hoping to hear back from you soon.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy),

I am sorry to hear about your ordeal. Now here is the deal: not all stores take back items after they have been purchased, even if the item does not meet up to the customers needs. There is no law in any State that says a store must accept returns. That policy is solely the responsibility of the particular store. So because some stores have a merchandise returns policy does not mean that alll stores have it. That is why it is esential to make sure that the policy exists before making purchases in a store.

Unless there was something on your receipt or a sign in the store that stated they have a returns policy, you are stuck with the mattress. There is really nothing you can do about it.

More help available if needed.

Thanks for your prompt reply. But if nothing is mentioned on the bill about the return policy, then is the store not obligated to replace the item? because none of the purchases made at walmart or other stores say anything to this effect on their bills and they do accept returns. I am not sure if my question makes sense to you..I am just worried as I spent a lot of money on the mattress and if I have to buy a new one from elsewhere, I have to spend a lot more.
I hope you understand my anguish.
Thanks.
