Hi-

The best way to sell your property is to enlist a professional to help you. Not only will a professional be able to evaluate the worth of each item, and how much they should sell for, but a professional will also be able to find the most appropriate buyers for the pieces. You can find professionals in your area by looking in the yellow pages of your phone book for antique dealers. You can also click here to be taken to a list.

If you're against the idea of enlisting outside help, you can always sell the items yourself. There are a few ways of going about this. The two easiest are: (a) having an estate/garage sale and (b) listing the items on a site like Ebay.

The advantages of option (a), estate sale, are that you will not have to do much work beyond posting an add in the local paper telling people when and where the sale is, and then monitoring the sale. There won't be much upfront cost to you. However, you will only be reaching a small group of potential buyers - those who are able to come to the sale.

The advantages of option (b), Ebay, are that you are posting your posessions to a group of million potential buyers. People from all over the world will be able to see what you are selling. The downside is that this is a more time consuming process as you will have to post each item separately (for the most profit), including taking pictures of each item and writing a description about each item. After the item has sold you will then need to take it to the post office to ship. You will be spending more money at the outset and spend more time with option (b) than (a) but you will likely make more money.

If you have a lot of items you want to sell I would urge you to enlist a professional rather than trying to do it yourself. However, if you only want to sell a few items, you can always try to sell things yourself first before getting help!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Emily

I have tried the so-called professional. They wanted to sell my items at 10% of market value and take 35% of the sales. I am limited where I live so I was considering Houston for sale of high value items. I have not found anyone who seemed to have an interest. Not sure how to proceed. Ebay is okay for some items and I have tried that route with some success. But I am reluctant to try to sell a diamond ring or ivory statue, although, I know you can use a reserve. I quess my real question is: what is the best way to contact professionals. Thanks

Thanks Emily! I will probable go the eBay route. I am a PayPal member and have used it as both, buyer and seller. I think you have given me the confidence to try to sell an item of significant value. Thanks again, Don
