Since I've bought an idea piece of Real Estate which would be great for a developer, I've been constantly harrarssed by the locals, the local government and lenders. The locals have tried to make it uninhabitable. The local government tried also, but had to backtrack when we brought in attorneys. The lenders have not worked with us thru a very difficult loan. I have cleaned up what was an eye sore for City and made it a respectable place, life has gotten more difficult rhan easier. I realize that I'm giving you a general view, however, I need to know what public officials and which media outlets I should contact and how should I go about it in order to get in on the air.

Peter,

Thank you for your research and reply. However all that was news before I took over the property. I made a substantial investment of sweat equity to get rid of the drug, disrepair and other problems that were unique to this property. We had made substantial improvements when we were treated unfairly. And yes we were treated unfairly. We brought in structure. The drugs and alcohol is gone. The rules are enforced so that there is now a peaceful environment. We have created a family atmosphere where everyone is comfortable. We have worked with homeless families on drugs who are now working and off of drugs and alcohol who are now working and productive citizens. We have rid this area of meth. The drug dealers are gone. And the businesses around us have flourished as a result. We have turned this lemon into lemonade. So the question is why do we keep getting punished?

So how would we approach the lobby groups, media and government about the success we've had in turning around this property? It seems very Un-American to treat someone wrong for giving those who are helpless a better quality of life

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy),

If you "keep getting punished", politely explain your successes to whoever is opposing you and ask how you can work with them to help the helpless even more.

To overcome the stigma that is attached to the property, you need to let people know that the area has been cleaned up. You need positive publicity and a re-education campaign.

Why not host a drug and alcohol free New Years party and invite the city to celebrate the improvements you have made?

Could you encourage your tenants to corporately publicly donate to a city project.

Are you able to make an educational presentation on how you are making an impact on the area, perhaps at a meeting of your local chamber of commerce.

Like I said in my last reply, a journalist or someone involved in public relations is person most likely to be able to help you with making a presentation to the public and they will have contacts with other media. Media broadcasters are always looking for stories and unlike advertising, they will publish them for free.

Encourage some of the homeless people you have helped to share their story and record it. Ask the surrounding businesses and police for references to add to the story. Collect anything that is published about your business and the success you have had and put together an information package which could be published on a website or given to media, lobby groups or the government.
