Question

How do you restore moldy videocassettes?

Sent to General Experts December 01, 2006 8:26 p.m.

My old video tape is covered in mold.
It won't play at all.
Can it be cleaned and restored?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Good evening, Customer (name blocked for privacy):

I wouldn't recommend doing this yourself. Once you disassemble a VHS tape, unless you really know what you're doing, it's hard to reassemble them correctly again.

Having said that, I found a company that repairs VHS tapes. I'm going to email them for you and see if they can fix a moldy tape. Don't accept my answer until I hear back from this company. More than likely, if they can repair it, they'll also transfer it onto a DVD.

This is their website: Video Conversions and prices

As soon as I hear back from them, I'll update you here. Then you can decide whether or not to do business with them.

Until then.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Hello again, Customer (name blocked for privacy):

Ron (from the company that I sent you the link from) said yes, he could repair the moldy tape and transfer it to DVD for around $70 (maybe a bit less, he said, but he'd have to look at it first).

I know that's kind of steep, but if it's a really important tape, it may be worth it.

This is the email he sent me:

Hey Billy. Yes I can.

It would be approx $70.00 which includes transferring it to DVD.

It possibly could be less - but I need to look at it.

I will be in Germany doing some CISCO Networking this coming week and will be home after Dec 11.

R Canby

If you'd like to email him to discuss this and find out where to send the tape, his email is rgcanby@ec.rr.com.

So glad I was able to help you on this. Should you require additional information, just click reply. Otherwise, please click ACCEPT. It's the only way I get paid for helping folks like yourself.

Have a great weekend!
