Tops is an American supermarket chain based in Williamsville, New York, with stores in the western and central regions of that state, northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio (the latter having once been Finast). It is a subsidiary of the Dutch corporation Ahold.
Have you notice a lot of official looking people in the store talking to the managers and looking around lately?
Rumor can be just that-- people love to talk. The best way to find out is to check with the city of Ithaca business license division and ask the clerk if an application has been made to change the business name. That information is open to the public.
Also, does your store sell any wine, beer or liquor? If so, you could also call the city of Ithaca to see if an application was made for a liquor license. This is also information that is open to the public.
I searched the internet and found no mention of a sale.
