The material the backpack is made of would determine if it could be washed. Most backpacks are nylon so would be OK to wash them. Fresh air and sunlight will often remove the odor. There are fabric fresheners on the market that will remove the odor. If all else fails there is Odor Ban, an odor eliminator not just covet it up.

Deodorizer Directions
OdoBan is effective at eliminating odors on porous surfaces such as upholstery, drapes, carpets, bedding, shower curtains and mattresses as well as nonporous surfaces such as walls and floors. Affected areas should be saturated with OdoBan to remain damp for at least 10 minutes. Then blot with a clean cloth and allow to dry.
