It sounds like the steering angle sensor got off centered. While performing the transaxle replacement did you secure the steering wheel in one position? I usually tie them in place with the seat belt.

If the wheel moved while you were replacing the transaxle and the steering shaft was allowed to rotate it could have either un-centered the steering angle sensor, or damaged the clockspring assembly.
Do you have a scan tool that will perform a steering angle sensor re-learn?
