11/97 buick skylark 3.1 6cyl starts,runs,no missing.Can turn off and will restart 3or4 times on 5th try [approx.]will not start.Acts like too much gas or not enough.When in' will not start' mode gas is going to and coming out of motor.Can leave alone for 48 hrs [approx.]and will act as above mentioned.Also if left to idle 5 min {approx.] will stall out.Replaced mapp and gas pressure switch,cam senser replaced 2yrs ago.plugs dry black and sooty

has not been checked recently. code from dec 2013 was p0341. don't trust it enough to drive it anywhere to check.Was running fine until recently

When engine does not start, if you hold the throttle all the way open and crank the engine, will it restart?

no, it will sort of backfire, not the load bang, a sort of huffing noise

Sounds like the crankshaft position sensor is failing. There are two on this engine. The one that controls spark and fuel timing is located on the back side of the engine block. Try replacing this sensor and see if this fixes your problem. Do not replace the sensor behind the crankshaft pulley, it will not affect the engine running or not.

got a printout from parts place about location of senser behind starter [had to remove starter] saw nothing resembling senser they gave me .Does it screw directly into the block or has it a retaining bolt? double checked and it is indeed a 3.1 engine

Starter is on front side of engine. Crank sensor is located on opposite side of engine (closest to firewall). See attached picture.
