Customer Question

2002 buick regal ls model

my fuel level sensor is bad and because I have over 160,000 miles on the car, my mechanic
is suggesting that I replace the fuel pump as well, because as long as we have to drop the gas tank, we might as well do that also.

Also the cost of the fuel level sensor is about $35.00, while the cost of the fuel sending
unit which includes the fuel pump and level sensor is about $250.00.

Could I just purchase a fuel pump and a level sensor and use my oold sending unit??

Thanks

Greg

Pete :

Hi and welcome to Just Answer.I will try and assist you today with your question. Please don't click on accept unless you feel satisfied with my assistance here.

Pete :

Your fuel level sensor is mounted to the fuel pump module, the module is part of the fuel pump, these can be replaced as two seperate components either the fuel pump with module (as this is one piece) or the fuel level sender seperate from the module/fuel pump.

Pete :

The tank on this vehicle does not have to be lowered to replace either of these parts as there is an access panel in the trunk to access the fuel pump and sender, this is a nice feature on some of the GM vehicles so the tank doesnt need to be removed to replace these.

Pete :

The choice is up to you on what you want to replace here,if it is only the fuel level sensor then I might just replace this unless you want to feel comfortable knowing the pump has been replaced and wont fail as they do tend to fail around this mileage in some cases.

Pete :

labor to replace either the pump/module or the sender only is 1.4 hours labor.

Pete :

Let me know if you need anything else, click accept if you feel satisfied with your answer as this is how I get credited for my time,Thanks Pete!
