The lock up converter shouldnot engage till it is in 4th gear
well I had a guy tell be to drive it then hit the brake and the gas at the same time.
So I did and u can here the convter unlock or somthing like that
You would not hear the converter lock up or unlock.
I know a little bite about transmissions just have no clue on this one
Does the car have a tach?
you can see it in the RPM's
when the converter is locked the rpm wont jump up like it does when it cold
as soon as it warms up it will lock
runs 2800 at 70mph
when you are at 50 mph can you drop the shifter into 3rd gaer and the tach come up in rpms with out changing the pressure on the gas pedal?
wont change a bit
if you are going 50 mph and do not move off of the gas pedal and lightly touch the brake pedal do the rpms go up or down
just enough pressure on the brake pedal to turn on the brake lights but not hard enough to apply the brakes

just like my truck with the Allison
At 70 mph andin 4th gear the rpms would be around 2600
when a converter is lock the engine will not free rev.
so 2800 is about right
its almost 3000 grand on the interstate
that is true only if the clutches in the trans are holding correctly.
its not in 4th gear
I was told when i bought it it dont go into 4th gear.

start off in manule low 1 and get up to 20 mph and shift to 2nd with out changing pressure on the gas pedal. When the speed gets up to 30 mph shift to 3rd. and at 50 shift to 4th
u can manually shift it through the gears
let me know if you have a drop in rmp for all 4 shifts.

it will slow u down yes and if you put it drive the rpm's will drop all the way down but no gear but if you leave it in 3rd the rpm's will stay high till you loose speed
just have the cash for a new/used trans
It a very nice SUV just needs this issue fixed
this will not be a shift solenoid problem. If it where you would get a code for it.
the problme is going to be inthe clutches for 4th gear them self.

Yes drop the pan and see what is in the bottomof the pan

Well I built my Allison 1000
allisons are much like a th400 trans
this is a Pain in the ass
the 4t60 and 65e transmissions are a little bit harder but not that bad
A pain to get out with out a lift and it's AWD
More parts and smaller parts at that

If you have not pulled one you are best to leave it to a trans shop. i will not even pull the awd out of the front wheel drive gms

The solenoids are behind the side pan not the bottom pan
We had that issue on our Saturn

You have to almost drop the trans to get to the solenoids
that is what i amthinking
you would think it would still go into 4th but slip
but it dont even do that
What i think has happened is the 4th gear clutch hup has stripped or broken off

most trans use more than one clutch pack per gear
If it does not drive you crazy not going into od then i would just drive it till something eles goes wrong with it

True but i have had alot of trouble with the clutch hubs stripping off
we dont drive it to work. Its just nice to haul the kids in. Lost of room
If I got a used trans what years would work?
1 in 15 4l60e transmissions do not have top have a new clutch hub when i rebuild them

The trans can be pulled with the engine left in the van
i have a " MINI PICK' That i use to hold the engine in so all i have to pull is the trans

As long as you listen to what i tell you to get you should be able to do the job if you rebuilt your allison

You will have to pull the chanel plate off, pull the od clutches and slide the clutch hub out and look at the spline at the base of the hub and see if the spline oes all the way to the tip if the hub
This is a 4T65E right
If there is 1/4 inch of no spline at the tip then the hub is garbage

The non awd is the same trans as the awd gust has a differant nose on the passanger side axle housing
You will want to get a trans go shift kit to install in this trasn when you decide to rebuild it. The kit is great and willmake the rebuild last much longer and you will love the way the trans performs after wards

And no it is not like the B&M shift kits for a 350
I know I got a Full Trans go in the Allison
You need to replace the converter too.
atsg has a great book for this trans and is a must "even for a vet" to have handy for small details like torque specs
the book is $20.00
As i said $500 for a rebiuld is not bad
you have to add trans fluid to that to and a new band

Pkus a clutch hub
With a trans go kit and good parts it is well worth the time and money. A good rebuilt unit will save all the mony you spend in gas miage savings
