This is usually what you see from a circuit that is intermittently open,but it can be a solenoid faining.Use an ohm meter to monitor the circuit & solenoid.

Now I just need to find some book that shows where to test.

The best place to test is a t the computer so you can see what the computer is seeing.I usually check the circuit from the computer to the trans with an ohm meter hooked up & move the wiring to see if you can simulate an open.

All the shift solenoids are on the valve body .Your reference to the "E" solenoid is unknown.The solenoids are called shift solenoids 1-2,3-4 ,or TCC.Here is a pic.
