Welcome Frodokitty. To release the ignition cylinder you need to have the key in the start position. I usually put the shifter in low then the car will not start when I turn the key to start. Please ask if you need more information.

with the shifter in low and the key in the start position, what do I do next to pull the assembly out of the steering column?

With the shifter in low and the key in the start position, insert a pick or small tool into the hole on the top to release the key. A small Allen key works well. This will allow the ignition cylinder to slide out.

You mentioned the top so I have taken the top plastic off. I do not see the hole you describe. I must have another style. It looks like I need to get it to a dealer. Thanks for your help
