Customer Question

We just bought a 2016 Mercury 115 hp four stroke. Twice the trim has turned on without our touching a thing. All attempts to stop the system failed until we killed the electrical system. After an hour, we turned the master back on and things worked normally.
What is going on? Can it be fixed?
Tx!

When does the system activate? On the water, or after you have cleaned the boat?

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
On water

The most common cause for this is water in the bow trim switch. The water will complete the circuit and make the engine trim. Can you remove the bow panel and inspect this switch?

but it is dry. Already checked.

There is also a bulletin out on the trim switch on the engine, your engine may fall into the serial number range. I do not have that bulletin here at home, but a call to your dealer would tell you if it is in it or not.

That is less than a complete answer. I could have started with the dealer free.

Ok, locate the trim switch on the engine, follow the wires from it to the first connection, unplug it. then go and use the boat as normal, if it does not trim, that switch is the problem, if it still does, it may be the bow switch, or a rodent has chewed wires inside the console and as the boat vibrates they touch.

OK, I will try it in the morning when I can see it.
