125 hp outboard mercury-replaced impeller-trying to

Customer Question

125 hp outboard mercury-replaced impeller-trying to re-install the lower unit-it goes on to about 3/8'' and will not flush up. We lined up water tube, shift shaft and the long shaft but can't seem to get it right. We have rotated the flywheel each time a little and it still wont go in. How do you get it all lined up to go into place so we can bolt it up?
JA: Sometimes boat issues seem like they'll be really complicated, but end up being easy to fix. The Marine Mechanic I'm going to connect you with knows all the tricks and shortcuts. Is there anything else the Marine Mechanic should be aware of?
Customer: Just what ive told you you. We can't get it on.

Got it thanks.

Have you checked to see if the prop will turn?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Turns freely

Ok, to get the shift totally aligned you are going to need to wiggle the upper shift shaft slightly to get the splines correct. I use a small pair of vise grips locked to the shaft so my hands are free.

We are losing daylight here

If there are more than one of you there, you can wiggle the shift shaft from where the cable connects to the link arm, inside the cowling.

We tried to wiggle it from above the lower unit. You can see the spines part where it goes into the lower unit. My helpers need to drive back to houston from Galveston for School and Work tomorrow. I am going to reschedule with you. I am going to town tomorrow too. I need more tools.
