Tan: We had to remove the Alpha sterndrive engine to have

Customer Question

Tan:
We had to remove the Alpha sterndrive engine to have the transom repaired on our 1992 SeaRAy. After reinstalling the engine and reconnecting all the cables, the boat performed well for two days on the water. Then the panel mount shifter would not go into neutral. We tore apart the shifter to fond the 'throttle-only shift assembly was blown apart. We replaced the shift assembly and reassembled the control module components. Now we can't get it into reverse when the cables are attached to the engine. After close inspection, the shift cable hits the stop or bottoms out before the gears are fully engaged, preventing the handle to move to reverse position. Is this a control box adjustment, or a shift cable adjustment at the engine???

Hello Norb.

We need to check the shift cable adjustments at the shift bracket on the engine first then we can do the control cables. Remove the bottom cable on the shift bracket going to the drive. Grab the cable and slide the cable end back and forth does it move freely? If yes then push the cable all the way in and check the measurement.

Here are the instructions.http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/oldnewenglandmarine/2012-07-14_130849_sc.jpg

Once you get the adjustment done install the cable with drive in forward gear. Now install the shift cable coming from the control so it fits in the mounts without changing the shift bracket adjustments. Another words leave the drive in forward gear shift control into forward gear. Now install cable from control. Adjust the barrel fitting on control cable coming from control. Now you should be able to operate the control normally . Start engine and go through shift procedure does it work correctly?
