I have a 1985 Mercury 75hp 4cyl that was running then sputtered to a stop and I could not get it to restart.

There are a list of things to check. Make sure that there is not any water in the fuel. If that is good, test for spark. If none is found, you wull need to test the blue wires coming from the stator with a multimeter. When cranking, the voltage to them should be 180V AC. If you are not getting any or it is low, the stator is bad. If the voltage is good, the switchbox has failed.
