when i shift in to forward it won't engage. It makes kind of a noise like gears not wanting to engage but not really a grinding noise

Customer: In the recent past it would shift in to forward but today it just kinda klinky noise not wanting to engage. Yesterday I had to shift about fifty times and then it finally engaged

no I haven't but if that was the case wouldn't I have the same problem shifting into reverse? I have no problem with that

Possibly. Remove the cable from the shift actuator on the engine, try the shift by hand and see if it will engage fully into FWD. You may need to turn the prop slightly to get it aligned with the clutch.
