How long has this been happening?

Has any work been done to the gear case recently?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Just happened yesterday, heard a high pitch sound like a belt in your car while idling. Took off got onto plane went 100 yards heard a bad noise slipped out of gear. Engine runs but will not engage forward or reverse

Ok, is the boat on a trailer?

ok, the first thing that you will need to do is to check the gear oil. There is a screw located on the lower fwd end of the bullet. Locate that screw and back it out until you get any liquid from it. You should only get oil, of you get water, or can remove it and see a bunch of metal, that is not a good thing.

Check this and let me know.
