Customer Question

I have a 3116 that is losing cooling water, about 2 gal per day. I've changed the orings on the heat exchanger but still leaking. Is it possible to pressure test the system in place, or will a cracked head only leak when hot.
Thanks
Leon

Thanks for asking your question Leon. I will try and help you out.

Yes you can pressure test the system. Sometimes a cracked head will leak hot and sometimes cold. I would definetely have it pressure tested first.

I would suspect you have either a blown head gasket or a cracked head. I am sorry. I wish I had better news.

How do I pressure test the system? Air at the expansion tank? Psi?
Expert:  Cat Man replied 11 months ago.

I would use a radiator pressure tester. It attaches at the rad cap.

Additionally, I noticed when I got a high temp alarm, I covered the tank with a towel to open the cap. After filling the expansion tank with water, I noticed the towel was black. What is the most likely cause, and what are the possibilities? Thanks.

I would use a radiator pressure tester to test the system.
