i have the shift shaft out of lower unit on a 1998 dt 200 can get it back in but only have reverse and neutral will not go into forward i am lost

Did you have the prop shaft out at all?

Or take any of the assy apart?

no just removed it to inspect magnet for metal it is a used lower unit i just bought

If you look down the hole for the shift shaft, can you see the grove in the shift slider?

i am sorry that is the whole assembly i romoved and yes i can see the shift slider

Is the gearcae still in Neutral and is the shift shaft also in Neutral? The cam should slide right into the slider.

both are in neutral the shaft slides right in pull up on shaft goes into reverse click one down in neutral click down again still in neutral

Is the shaft traveling far enough to trigger FWD? Have you tried to turn the prop shaft while shifting into fwd to make sure that the clutch is lined up with the gear?

Ok,

Pres down on the upper portion of the shaft and see if you can make the shift cam move correctly.
