Hello. My name is Tan.

The only reason a velvet drive slips is worn clutch packs. Did you have the transmission rebuilt with new clutch packs?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
not to my knowledge
Expert:  Tan replied 1 year ago.

What did the fluid look like when you changed the fluid? Was the fluid dark or brown in color.? Did you happen to smell the fluid?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
changed fluid this morning , started motor brought up to temp 160 -idled 650 not creeping after fluid change/engaged foward in slip stayed 650 no creep.fluid was dark purple burnt odor
Expert:  Tan replied 1 year ago.

Ok that is a sign of the clutch packs are wearing out. The fluid should be red in color. No burnt smell and no dark color.

After you changed the fluid did the transmission still slip under load?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
no, rpm stayed the same 650 foward and reverse while tied up in slip with tranny just engaged,no throttle, on and off for 1/2 hr.previous to fluid change rpm was creeping to 10k while only having gear engaged
Expert:  Tan replied 1 year ago.

Ok I would take the boat out and run it see how it does. The dirty fluid will cause the shift valve to not function correctly. If the valve doesn't close completely the tranny will slip. But we have to run the boat first to be sure of the condition of the clutch packs.

If the tranny shifts good and stay in gear you are good to go. Other wise the transmission will have to come out and be repaired.

Post back with questions and concerns.

Thank you........Tan
