Customer Question

I have a 1998 Yam TXRV 200 HP 2 stroke outboard. Starts and runs excel out of gear. When in gear, #1 & #2 cylinders drop out (verified with a timing light) at 3000 RPM. Obviously engine drops to about 2000 RPM. Have disconnected the temp sensors, tested the oil injection sensors with same results. Everything checks out good, from stator, pulsar coils, crank position sensor with peak reading meter. Have switched around coils to verify it's always #1 & #2, so it's not ign coil. Had it in to dealer and dealer duplicated my work and is completely stumped.

Hello my name is ***** ***** am I speaking with?

When the problem happens, what is the voltage at the ignition coils reading on both the firing and non-firing coils? Have you replaced the CDI yet?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
CDI replaced. 12 VDC
Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.

12 VDC to what?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Sorry, hit reply b4 completed. Voltage goes to zero on dead cylinders
Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.

Did you replace the CDI with a new part or a used part?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
A used part. Engine appears to be going into safe mode. Disconnecting sensors doesn't fix problem.

Have you plugged in the diagnostic harness with the light bulb in it to see if it is flashing any codes?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No, I wasn't aware this engine had that capability.
